Born & raised in Newark, DJ KL began his musical career in high school, when he worked on tunes for local businesses’ commercials. KL has bridged the skate and dance scenes between NY and NJ since 2006, when he began playing regularly at Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center. In 2008, while playing at Crazy Legs in Brooklyn — founded by CPDSA co-founder Lezly Ziering — KL met Bob Nichols, CPDSA co-founder and president emeritus. After the session ended, Bob told KL, “I didn’t hear one bad song all night. If you want to play in Central Park, get in touch with me,” and the rest is history.
A professional DJ since the mid-90s, KL has brought his unique open-format style far and wide — playing in Barbados and Las Vegas, and playing afterparties for tours including Chris Brown / Kelly Rowland and Van Halen / Kool and the Gang. KL cites his musical influences as a blend of Tony Humphries, Larry Levan, Jellybean Benitez, Kool DJ Red Alert, and more.
